Responsibilities
  • Treat a wide range of patients from infants through the elderly
  • Consult with physicians and other healthcare staff to help develop and modify individual patient care plans
  • Provide complex therapy requiring a great deal of independent judgment, such as caring for patients who are on life support in hospital intensive care units.
  • Evaluate patients by performing limited physical examinations and conducting diagnostic tests including those that measure lung capacity tests and acidity and alkalinity of the blood
  • Treat patients by using oxygen or oxygen mixtures, chest physiotherapy, and aerosol medications.
  • Connect patients who cannot breathe on their own to ventilators that deliver pressurized oxygen into the lungs
  • Teach patients how to use medications and equipment
  • Perform regular checks on patients and equipment
  • Supervise respiratory therapy technicians if needed
Qualifications

• Associates of Arts degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
• Must be board certified by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)
• Hold an active, unrestricted Registered Respiratory Therapy license or certified Respiratory Therapy License in a state, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States
• Recent experience caring for short-term and long-term ventilated patients in a hospital setting
• The Registered Respiratory Therapist must have 7 years of experience working as a Respiratory Therapist with a minimum of 24 months of that time primarily performing in an Emergency Department or ICU setting
• The Certified Respiratory Therapist must have 5 years of experience working as a Respiratory Therapist with a minimum of 24 months primarily performing services in an Emergency Department or ICU setting
• Must hold current ACLS and BLS certifications
• Must demonstrate application of respiratory therapy principles and techniques to identify and evaluate respiratory conditions and disorders
• Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills
• Proficiency with computer and common office equipment, as well as with MS Office products required.
• Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, organized, and demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Location of services may at times be in remote, austere or challenging environments.
• Must be able to perform duties in a stressful and high paced environment without physical limitations.
• Ability to adapt to sudden changes and flexibility in work requirements to include potential shift changes based on operational needs and/or command priorities.
